What hobbies, activities, and pastimes fuel your passion?

I am crazy about music, reading, gardening and lots of other activities, but, as corny as it may seem, time spent with my little kids is thing that makes me happiest. Is it rude to call one’s children a hobby? Maybe so, but just the idea of traipsing around with them doing all sorts of stuff gets me out of bed in the morning. I also have my four-year-old son helping with gardening – he can shovel with the best of them, and it’s time he started earning his keep!

What does an average day (or week) of your life look like?

Oh, I imagine a lot of people will answer this way, but there is no average day! I am out and about in the community, meeting people, trying to fill their volunteer needs and otherwise make connections for them. This is what makes the whole thing exciting. I make many new and terrific contacts every week; always something new. Also different for me in the non-profit world is that nothing feels like it is done until it is done; there are lots of moving pieces at all times. I actually love being this busy!

Week 1: First Impressions

How did you become the man you are today?

The short answer would be patience. I spent a long time (too long) growing up. I am very happy to have found what I consider to be my niche in the non-profit world. I had a vague feeling that there was something more I could be doing with my life, but had no idea what it would be. So, by patiently plodding along, picking up life lessons here and there, I was ready for the stars to align in the ways that they have. I look at my life with my wife and two kids (ages 4.5 and fifteen months), my job I like, and all the other blessings and think: “Hmm…not bad for a 28 year old!” (I’m 46.)

Why should people vote for you as the best Role Model for Men at Work?

If you vote for me, I promise not to come to your office and talk your face off about all the great things happening at United Way of the Greater Dayton Area … maybe!
