Week 3:  Casually Cool

What hobbies, activities, and pastimes fuel your passions?

My life is always better when I’m active. I began running recreationally at the age of 30. My first run was a mixture of runs and walks because I couldn’t make it farther than a block before gasping to a stop. My first 5k in Troy I looked so bad one of the volunteer bike paramedics rode behind me most of the race.  I’ve run two marathons, a ton of 5ks, hundreds of miles on local parks and trails, and never regretted a single moment.

What does an average day (or week) of your life look like?

I am an editor with the Dayton Daily News. The news never stops. My average day begins at home reading the papers and our digital sites and apps to see how we are performing at that moment. I go over reports on how our digital sites did the previous day – how many people came to our products and what did they read. When I get to work the overnight crews have already kept the news coming all night for our readers: there are stories and plans already in motion. I work with our editors and reporters on my team and on WHIO-TV and radio to make sure our group is taking on the kinds of stories our readers, viewers and listeners expect of us. A lot of the day is spent in down-range planning: how are we doing now and what should we be doing in one, three or six or 12 months to do better. I go home late and read way too many emails.

How did you become the man you are today?

We are all works-in-progress, but I am who I am because of the people around me. We all affect one another. I was raised by decent and generous parents. I have a great partner in Helen, and we have three children who have taught us as much as we have them. I’ve had the good luck to work with great people throughout my career.

Why should people vote for you as the best Role Model for Men at Work?

Vote for me, then vote for all my competition, because Clothes that Work is a great organization that helps people put their best face forward when heading into the work world.
